History

Founding Fathers
The story of Alpha Kappa Psi begins at New York University. After the passage of the Certified Public Accountants Act of 1896 in New York State, an increasingly urgent demand arose for adequate education in all branches of higher accountancy. There also developed an important calling known as the profession of administration. To meet this double need for higher commercial education and for a college of accountancy, the Council of New York University decided to establish a school on a broad basis of advanced instruction in political economy, accounting and commercial law.
During the winter months of the 1903-1904 academic year at New York University, the idea of starting a business fraternity was first brought up. The initial group, called the "Brooklyn Four" - comprised of George Bergen, Howard Jefferson, Nathan Lane, Jr. and Frederic Leach - were focused on the spirit of brotherhood that ties people of vision together. These four men grew to be close friends while attending night classes, and they walked home together each night over the Brooklyn Bridge. With minds and hearts running the same course, the first organizational meeting was held on October 5, 1904.
The following spring on March 20, 1905 the fraternity was officially chartered in the state of New York, with ten members. Alpha Kappa Psi was founded on the principles of educating its members and the public to appreciate and demand higher ideals in business and to further the individual welfare of members during college and beyond. In the century that has passed, the fraternity has grown to a membership exceeding 240,000 in over 300 chartered chapters within the United States and the United Kingdom.
In August 1976, women were admitted into the Fraternity under President Richard Reis at the Minneapolis Convention.
